The Social Network

I remember seeing this trailer before Inception. If you pitched me the idea of a movie based on Facebook, I would think it was very silly. Seeing the trailer, however, I can’t help but be excited. The cinematography is haunting, and the movie looks very dark, yet very appealing. Time will tell.

Below is the atmospheric cover of Radiohead’s Creep by Scala heard in the trailer. Amazing.

The software behind Facebook has influenced the manner in which countless people are able to interact with one another. How this provides a meaningful platform in the context of a movie, is debatable. People who shun publicity for the sake of it will likely relegate this movie to a well scripted promotion, and I for one think it should be treated as such. Those who use the software, the site that is, likely will relate but not debate.

I think you’re definitely right in thinking this is a promotion for the platform. But what movies nowadays aren’t impacted by the norms of everyday life? Facebook has literally changed how we function everyday. We often no longer phone someone, because a post on Facebook seems that much more convenient.

What I don’t quite know yet, is what the movie will be focused on. There are avenues such as the control Facebook places on us, or the rights they put into question, that could result in a story worth exploring. However, if it is simply a hollywood glossed moneymaker, than I would agree in seeing it as nothing more than a glorified advertisement.
